The current usage status of tricycles in different countries: the development prospects of electric vehicles in diverse scenarios

In the global transportation system, tricycles have become an indispensable member of the electric vehicle family due to their unique flexibility and practicality. The development and application of electric tricycles and electric bicycles in different countries deeply reflect the local transportation needs, policy guidance, and cultural characteristics, outlining a diverse travel picture.

In India, tricycles are one of the most representative modes of transportation on the streets and alleys. Fuel powered motor tricycles (tutus) undertake over 80% of short distance passenger transportation tasks in cities, while electric tricycles are rapidly rising due to their environmental advantages. The New Delhi government will implement the "Green Mobility Plan" from 2023, providing car purchase subsidies and road rights incentives for electric tricycles. Currently, over 200000 electric tricycles have been put into operation. These vehicles are not only used for daily passenger transportation, but also for innovative purposes such as "mobile medical vehicles" and "street libraries", becoming an extension of urban livelihood services. In contrast, electric bicycles are more commonly used as personal commuting tools in India, especially favored by young people. Their lightweight and flexible characteristics make them more advantageous in narrow alleys.

European countries present completely different application scenarios. In the Netherlands, electric tricycles are often used for home shopping and child transportation, with their body design incorporating storage space and child seats to create a unique "family friendly" style. Amsterdam has established dedicated electric tricycle lanes and provided tax exemptions for vehicles that meet EU environmental standards. In Germany, electric tricycles are mainly used in the logistics field. Companies such as Amazon and DHL have adopted electric tricycles on a large scale for urban end of pipe delivery, with an average daily mileage of 80 kilometers, forming the main force of "last mile" delivery together with electric bicycles.

As the world's largest electric vehicle market, China has a more diverse range of applications for tricycles. In rural areas, electric tricycles are the core tool for transporting agricultural products and family travel. Their strong load-bearing capacity and adaptability to complex road conditions far exceed electric bicycles. In cities, electric tricycles are not only a standard feature in the express delivery and food delivery industries, but also innovative mobile commercial forms such as "breakfast carts" and "shoe repair stalls". Data shows that in 2024, the annual sales of electric tricycles in China will exceed 12 million units, and electric bicycles will reach 35 million units, jointly occupying more than 60% of the global electric vehicle market share.

The current usage status of tricycles in different countries is essentially a reflection of the deep integration of electric vehicle technology and social demand. From livelihood services in India to green logistics in Europe, and to full coverage of urban and rural areas in China, electric tricycles and electric bicycles are driving the global transportation transition towards low-carbon and intelligent development through differentiated paths.
